Prof. Silvio,

Steven Pinker wrote "How the mind works". It's a very interesting book on Cognitive Science. He makes some comments about research that claims the mind is like a very powerful computer with only 4-5 elements of stack space (an "estimated" guess). As soon as you think about something else, that stack space is swapped with something else and it is difficult to replace it with that element that was there during the concentration. (whether this stack grows larger with the ages is a different question).

BBC Prime has documentaries about the Human Mind that I can definitely recommend. It is explained in common language how important it is to be able to concentrate. That means environments that are free of diversion. Besides more efficient multi-tasking of routine tasks, it is also very important for the generation of new ideas. If you consider the brain as an associative computer (besides computational), new ideas can be compared to the creation of new associations that did not exist before, based on semi-analogous examples in entirely different contexts. That requires absolute concentration not to lose the stream of thoughts and imagination.
